The Social Justice Group 20/10/2010 is working on an initiative around violence.
What is violence in our community?
[ul]bullying (school workplaces)
glassing and assaults when drunk
domestic violence
parents being aggressive at school pickups
rowdy rough behaviour on trains
elder abuse
hold-ups at shops graffiti broken glass
blaring ghetto blasters & strong language in quiet suburbs or public places
road rage[/ul]
The Police are often the first and most appropriate port of call.
Centrecare works with victims of violence.
Quite a lot of it represents alienation from society.
Suggestions include:
[ul]the possibility of a combined churches effort on violence
Promoting contact information on domestic violence helplines
Engaging youth
Alternatives to violence courses (some great ones run in prisons)
St Andrew’s School “Resilience Program” – anti-bullying teaches respect for each other and to be able to speak out if something’s not righ
It would be great to run a resilience program for adults (there weren’t such programs until quite recently so many people missed out and would love to have the skills to deal with things like bullying in the workplace)
Courses in anger management – Could direct people to the Relaxation Centre in Alderley where Kate Crombie runs non-violent communication courses
Having a seminar with a panel of three: school workplace neighbourhood
Wayne Bennett would be a good person to have on such a panel [/ul]
