The stubborn resilience of happiness.
Nice phrase. It reminds me of something I read about how we return to our equilibrium state of mind about 6 months after a major crisis in our life. If we are happy people we return to happy. If we are dour we return to dour. Well. Approximately so the theory goes. I’d prefer happiness.
But it does seem relevant in the context of absorbing all the disastrous stuff we are facing potentially. As I’ve read my way through mountains of absolutely awful reports I typically plunge into deep gloom for a few days then seem to bounce back up to chirpy happiness but without illusions of what we face. Friends duck for cover straight after I’ve just read a gloomy report though! Can’t blame them. It really helps though to have someone who you can talk this stuff through with who is prepared to go on the journey with you to work it all through. I find there is nothing harder to take in coming to terms with this stuff that a determined Polyanna.
