One of the questions on ABC TV’s Q&A with Stephen Fry last night was:

What is the most effective thing most householders can do to reduce their carbon footprint (legally)? (Talking British households)

According to Stephen Fry the answer is to get rid of the dog.
Keeping a dog has the equivalent carbon footprint of manufacturing and running 2 Toyota Landcruisers.

One cat is the equivalent of manufacturing and running a Volkswagen Golf.

Having a child has a greater carbon footprint than owning a dog.

It was all pretty black humour.
