I’ve been analysing our electricity bills and observe the following:

Domestic power prices (Tariff 11) show a smooth exponential increase in price EXCEPT that they introduced a Service Charge (Tariff 11 Service fee supply charge) from about 2008 which is additional to this smooth exponential increase. It is going through its own smooth increase except it is charged on a daily basis not by what we use.

We installed photovoltaic panels and that did away with the Off-Peak (Controlled Tariff 33) power need but it has been replaced by a Minimum Payment which is another smoothly increasing daily payment.

The two ‘daily’ payments that must be paid regardless of how little power we use are now adding together to nearly 50cents per day and the daily amounts are increasing exponentially.

Clearly the power companies have decided that charging daily independently of how much we use (or how carefully we save power) is a more profitable way to go.
