Paper tickets are being phased out at the end of this year on buses trains and ferries but GoCards are still not popular with thousands of public transport users.
At 30 June just 58.5% of regular commuters used GoCards with uptake slowing.
Paper tickets cost up to 40% more than GoCards.
Commuter advocacy group Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said the basic fare structure for the GoCard needs improvement. It should include daily capping periodical ticket options like weekly or a monthly and a special daily seniors cap. In many cases people still choose to buy a daily because for that they can have unlimited journeys.
There was supposed to be an option for a casual go card user and tourist but we haven’t see it yet. There isn’t the flexibility under fare options there is under paper tickets.
[You’d think they could have more flexibility since computers can work it out.]
