We’re very concerned about not being able to trust the oil we buy in the supermarkets (labelled ‘Olive Oil’) as being anything more than oils high in omega-6 fatty acids (such as Canola) wrongly called olive oil.
Apparently in Australia the naming rules about oils allow packaging to be utterly misleading. What we were told at a talk by an Australian olive grower is that in this country if you mix just a little bit of olive oil in with a whole lot of other types of oil you are allowed to label it as ‘olive oil’.
This seems very wrong to me but my immediate concern is how to source olive oil that is actually 100% olive oil.
Everything I’ve read about food oils says that they are crucially important in health and that getting the omega-6 fats too high and out of the right ratios is deadly.
