Financial disadvantage is implicated in struggle and failure at school setting a pattern of underachievement for the rest of life.

The Smith Family says that one in seven children is living in disadvantage in Australia. Roughly that translates to about a thousand children in The Grove living in disadvantage which may be affecting their education and life opportunities.

A lot of children but not insurmountable if we own the challenge. We should be able to ensure that every child in The Grove gets a good chance at life. These kids are the future.

Through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Workers families are connected to learning opportunities in their local community and also encourage them to fully participate in their education. What are the learning opportunities in the local community of The Grove?

It would be good to know more about what role The Smith Family is playing locally and how we can support them to help our local children emerge from disadvantage.

The Smith Family’s guiding principles are:

– Be about social change for the benefit of all Australians
– Be focused on disadvantaged children within the family context
– Concentrate on prevention and early intervention across the life course with an emphasis on key transition points
– Be evidence-based using a multi-disciplinary approach
– Be embedded in the community
– Work with and through other organisations
– Significantly increase and diversify our sources of funding and our resource base
– Enhance our internal capacity and in turn use our resources to build the community’s capacity

The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program supports disadvantaged children and young people all the way through their education from pre-school and primary school to senior school and on to tertiary studies if they choose. This holistic long term support gives young Australians the assistance they need to develop vital life skills stay engaged in their education and have the best chance to realise their potential.

Learning for Life support is provided to disadvantaged children and young people in three main ways: through Learning for Life Workers who connect them to learning opportunities in their local community and also encourage them to fully participate in their education; by enabling access to Smith Family literacy programs and mentoring support; and through financial assistance to help families afford the cost of their children’s essential education items.

Learning for Life programs support not only disadvantaged children but also their families who provide the crucial nurturing relationships and supportive learning environments that children need. Parents can access education opportunities themselves to help them develop and build their own skills and abilities.

Learning for Life is informed by research and made possible through The Smith Family’s network of strong partnerships with other organisations and individuals working towards its vision of a more caring and cohesive Australia.
