Time and work-life balance: The Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey:
o More than a quarter of full-time workers now work more than 48 hours a week. Women in full-time work and working mothers are worst off.
o There is a strong public policy drive to increase employment rates bump up the hours of part-time workers and to increase the overall span of working life increasing the pension age from 65 to 67 by 2023.
o High work-life pressures among those who work long hours or who do not take their holidays raise issues about the sustainability of the existing workforce.
Employers might say they want older workers but they don’t really. They’re reasonably OK with retaining the workers they have longer but taking on older workers as new employees is a much harder sell.
