Big discussion yesterday where I started to learn a little about the difference between these two terms.

Social housing is public housing used to be Housing Commission. People pay 25% of their income. The QLD Govt is said to have very poor ability to manage their social housing tenants so they aren’t a problem for the community they live in.

Affordable housing is different. It is what has now been built in Blackwood St Mitchelton. The Brisbane Housing Company is the biggest provider of affordable housing in Brisbane. The reputation of affordable housing is much better.

We need more discussion on this and to collect information on it.

It is very important that we know a lot about these two types of housing because the 2 models for development at the Ferny Grove Station Precinct both include ‘residential’.

We’ve asked for more information about what ‘residential’ means and were told there was no information available. But this is the sort of thing that can be landed on us long after it is too late to do anything to change it.

Our culture in this Kedron Brook valley has a great deal of cultural integrity and long-term stability and a low level of crime.

One large social housing development at the Ferny Grove Station Precinct would make a profound change in the profile of the Ferny Grove/ Ferny Hills area.

This is a resilience issue.
